A Family's Legacy Supports Graduate Students' Native Plant Research

A Family's Legacy Supports Graduate Students' Native Plant Research
Nick Jensen, Ph.D., is a past recipient of the Goldhamer Family Scholarship for his native California plant research at Tejon Ranch. Nick was the first person to survey and study the botany of this conservation area, the largest private landholding in California.

When Dr. Irving Goldhamer retired from his long career as a physician, "he was looking for something to sink his teeth into," recalls his son, Dr. David Goldhamer, "and California Botanic Garden became his passion and chosen philanthropy." Irv became active at the Garden as a dedicated Nature Interpreter and a member of the Volunteer Board.

As Irv learned more about the importance of the Garden's research mission , he and his wife Phyllis expressed their long-term commitment by endowing a research fellowship, funding graduate students who conduct research on California native plants, with preference to those students conducting research on drought tolerant plants and irrigation improvements.

In addition to funding the endowment with a current gift, the Goldhamers also set up a Charitable Gift Annuity to provide them with income during their respective lifetimes. After Irv passed away in 2004, and Phyllis in 2014, the remaining proceeds from the Charitable Gift Annuity were added to the Goldhamer Family Scholarship Fund, allowing additional funding to be provided to qualified graduate students.

Son David Goldhamer continues the family legacy. David is a Water Management Specialist Emeritus, at the Department of Land, Air and Water Management at UC Davis, specializing in tree crop issues. He continues to add to the scholarship in memory of his parents.

David comments that, "one of my wishes is that the Goldhamer Family Scholarship be used to facilitate others getting degrees in water-related disciplines," such as those earned by Ph.D. botanists at CalBG.

CalBG and all of the Goldhamer scholars, past, present and future thank David and his family for their extraordinary generosity and enduring legacy.
